The best way to break your fast: What to eat first

Eating and Fasting · 4 min read · Aug 3, 2025
Interrupt fasting gently. The longer the fasting period, the lighter the first meal should be. Many people are accustomed to eating and drinking immediately after fasting, not because they are extremely hungry, but often due to a sense of compensation. However, overeating after fasting can often cause stomach discomfort. Try to break your fast with a light snack first, and wait thirty to sixty minutes before having a full meal. This approach typically helps to curb hunger and allows your body to gradually adjust to eating again. If you have been fasting for an extended period, it's best to prepare in advance. Keep a healthy snack in the fridge so that when the time comes to end your fast, you’re ready and not tempted by convenient but less healthy food options.
